ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Department of Kinesiology and Health Science faculty

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science had a successful inaugural student academic and faculty recognition award ceremony April 3. Presided over by Provost Dr. Lorenzo Smith, the event featured Dr. Judy Abbott, dean of the James I. Perkins College of Education, delivering the keynote address, commending the award recipients, and challenging the faculty, staff and students to pursue excellence in all their endeavors.

Professors of kinesiology and health science were awarded for the following: Dr. Linda Bobo, excellence in teaching; Dr. Todd Whitehead, excellence in research; and Dr. Dawnella Rust, excellence in service.

Nelson Rusche College of Business faculty

Faculty members in the Nelson Rusche College of Business were recognized as Best Paper Award winners at the Academy of Business Research Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, in March.

Dr. Raymond Jones, assistant professor of management and marketing and director of the entrepreneurship program; Dr. Jason Reese, associate professor of marketing and associate dean for faculty and administration; Dr. Amy Mehaffey, lecturer of marketing; and Dr. Janet Jones, associate professor of accounting, received the award for “Pleasing Everyone: Strategic Market Segmentation of CrossFit.”

The paper explored the dilemma small fitness business owners often face: how to strategically attract diverse customers while providing each with a unique experience.

Mental health services expanded for students

Through funding made available as a result of the affiliation with The University of Texas System, SFA has partnered with virtual health and well-being provider, TimelyCare, as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to provide and improve health and well-being services to its student body. The partnership, which began in January, greatly expands and streamlines existing services and adds new opportunities for students to seek mental and physical health support.

Career conference keynote to feature Kevin Carr

The Rusche College of Business is hosting its annual College to Career Conference from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 25 in the McGee Business Building. This year's keynote speaker is Kevin Carr '92, founder and president of Community Beer Co.

This event brings together students, business professionals, alumni and corporate partners to share experiences and advice as well as to assist students in transitioning to their full-time careers. Students and community members are welcome to attend.

OWLE to host April meeting tomorrow

The Organization for Women’s Leadership and Equity invites all interested staff and faculty to its next meeting from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Wyatt Room of Steen Library as well as via Zoom.

OWLE is a professional organization of staff and faculty who work together to empower women and support women’s professional advancement while balancing their professional, personal, and physical and mental health demands and needs.

UMC to offer certified communicator training

The Certified Communicator Program from the Division of University Marketing Communications will show you how to be an effective SFA brand ambassador.

From advertising, photography and videos to web presence and Slate emails, these Zoom modules presented by UMC staff members offer the latest information on how to market your event or service as well as branding updates stemming from SFA’s affiliation with The University of Texas System.

To earn a certificate, you must complete the Foundations module and three other modules of your choice. The trainings are held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays. April trainings include:

Wind Ensemble, Pineywoods Brass Quintet to perform
Pineywoods Brass Quintet

The Wind Ensemble at SFA will present “Musical Postcards,” a concert featuring a performance by the SFA faculty Pineywoods Brass Quintet, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in Turner Auditorium.

The Pineywoods Brass Quintet will perform the SFA premiere of “Dust” by composer Jennifer Jolley. SFA joined the consortium for this brass quintet concerto, which is based on the West Texas landscape, climate and history.

SFA Opera Theater to present Weill’s ‘Street Scene’ today

“Street Scene,” an American opera by Kurt Weill, Langston Hughes and Elmer Rice, is this year’s opera theater production presented by the School of Music.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1929 play of the same name by Rice, “Street Scene” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, April 13, in Turner Auditorium.

Real Women Have Curves

Anyone who likes warm-hearted dramadies about family and the struggles and joys of making a small business work will love the presentation of “Real Women Have Curves” by Josefina López.

Celebrating the immigrant experience, body positivity and the wisdom and strength of Latinas, “Real Women Have Curves” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 18 through 20 and April 25 through 27 and at 2 p.m. April 20 and 21 and April 27 and 28 in the Black Box Theatre.

Trombonist Marsalis to join SFA’s Swingin’ Axes in University Series performance
Marsalis

The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and the School of Music will present acclaimed trombonist, composer and producer Delfeayo Marsalis in a compelling performance with SFA’s Swingin’ Axes jazz band at 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Turner Auditorium.

The final University Series event of the 2023-24 Centennial Season, the concert provides an exciting opportunity to see and hear this renowned New Orleans musician as he takes the stage with SFA’s outstanding jazz musicians. The concert is sponsored in part by Etech.

Solar eclipse

Patrick Moriarty, a retired science teacher from upstate New York, promised to host an eclipse viewing party for the April 8, 2024, eclipse for his ninth grade class in 1978. The teacher fulfilled his promise on Monday, welcoming his students almost half a century later.
