UMC wins 26 higher ed marketing awards in 2023
The Division of University Marketing Communications won a total of 26 awards for marketing and communications projects, initiatives, campaigns and efforts completed in 2023. The awards were bestowed from three separate agencies: the American Advertising Awards, Educational Advertising Awards and Collegiate Advertising Awards.
Winning entries included such marketing campaigns as a Texas Monthly full-page ad series and a digital brand awareness campaign, as well as the university’s viewbook and road piece — two of SFA’s highest visibility recruitment pieces created in collaboration with SFA’s Office of Admissions.

College of Forestry and Agriculture to host Drone Day
The Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture will host Drone Day 2024 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 26 in the Forestry Building conference room.
The event, presented by ATCFA and the Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation, will feature multiple presentations and demonstrations on real-world drone applications from different entities including the U.S. Forest Service, Weyerhaeuser, LeTourneau University, Arch Aerial, Hydrex Drone Division and AllTerra Central. The Student Association of Spatial Scientists is organizing the day’s activities under the guidance of Dr. David Kulhavy, Dr. I-Kuai Hung, Dr. Daniel Unger and Dr. Yanli Zhang.
To register, complete the Drone Day 2024 form. There is no cost to register. The event is primarily for geospatial science professionals and students in geospatial science fields. Lunch will be provided.

East Texas Adventurers looking for counselors
East Texas Adventurers, funded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Community Outdoor Outreach Program grant, is a program designed to provide a transformational and educational experience for middle school students centered around four overnight camping trips to state parks in East Texas. Students enrolled on campus for the 2024-25 academic year have the opportunity to become adventure counselors for these trips.

Global Gateway to Malaysia, Eid celebration today
Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to the Office of International Programs’ global gateway presentation on Malaysia at 3 p.m. today in Steen Library, Room 103. The event will include a presentation led by an SFA international student from Malaysia who will introduce attendees to her country, traditions and lifestyle.

Human sciences to host annual Kentucky Derby fundraiser tomorrow
The sixth annual Kentucky Derby dinner and auction is set for 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Fredonia Hotel.
The event will feature a four-course dining experience inspired by traditional Kentucky Derby dishes. A cocktail reception with a cash bar will take place at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Silent and live auctions will take place throughout the evening.
Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $60 per person, $100 for couples and $400 for a table of eight.

The Nacogdoches Symphony Club and the Nacogdoches Music Teachers Association will mark milestones in each organization’s history by presenting “A Brick Street Serenade,” a concert and scholarship fundraiser planned for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Stone Fort Wind Quintet concert to honor works of Schickele, aka P.D.Q. Bach
The Stone Fort Wind Quintet will present a recital of programmatic works featuring a varied collection of musical depictions when the faculty ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Cole Concert Hall.
In honor of composer and performer Peter Schickele, also known through his bizarre alter ego as P.D.Q. Bach, who passed away this year, the first half of the program will consist of his “A Year in the Catskills.”

Symphonic Band, University Band to present old, new, borrowed, blue musical imagery
The Symphonic Band and the University Band will present “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” featuring music faculty members and student and community ensemble performances at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Turner Auditorium.
“The concert theme is taken from a traditional old English wedding rhyme, and each piece on the program represents at least one idea from the rhyme,” said Dr. Chris Kaatz, assistant director of bands at SFA and director of the Symphonic Band.

A small discovery of a 17th century silver thimble in Wales uncovered a love story that stood the test of time.
Rob Edwards was metal detecting in Wales near Carew Castle when he discovered an antique, engraved thimble. The thimble bears an inscription around the base in capital letters: “LYKE STIL AND LOVE EVER.” The inscription allegedly means “like enduringly, love forever.”
