CTL to host critical thinking and media literacy session

The Center for Teaching and Learning will host a session on critical thinking and media literacy from 1 to 2 p.m. tomorrow via livestream. Register now on MyTraining to join Emily Dodson, learning experience coordinator, for a closer look at why the ability to critically assess information, navigate digital media and develop strong analytical skills is essential for students' academic and personal growth.

OIP to host Global Gateway to Ghana
Ghana

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to the Office of International Program's cultural presentation about Ghana at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in Steen Library, Room 103.

The event will include a presentation led by an SFA international student from Ghana who will introduce attendees to their country, traditions and lifestyle. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Campus Recreation to host pickleball courts grand opening

Join SFA Campus Recreation for the grand opening of SFA's new pickleball courts at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the pickleball courts near the SFA tennis courts.

Whether you're a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, come experience the thrill of pickleball. There will be friendly matches, carnival-style pickleball games, food and tons of fun.

Faculty and staff speak at STEM Club meeting

SFA STEM Club had a successful meeting with nearly 100 students thanks to the help from faculty and staff.

Guest speakers included Dr. Erin Childress, Trina Menefee, Laura Turner, Dr. Jane Long, Cassie Barr and Ashley Chandler. Information regarding advising, campus resources and volunteering opportunities were discussed.

SFA STEM Club promotes academics, service and community among all SFA students. With ongoing support from faculty and staff, we're excited to continue empowering our Lumberjacks to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and beyond.

SFA Gardens to host fruit research field day

SFA Gardens will host a fruit research field day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, featuring kiwifruit, muscadine grapes, blueberries, figs, feijoas and other fruits. 

Speakers will include Dr. David Creech, director of SFA Gardens; Ross Stevenson, Kiwi Co; and Dr. Tim Hartmann and Dr. Justin Scheiner, both faculty members in Texas A&M University’s Department of Horticultural Sciences.

CCPD to offer two résumé workshops

The Center for Career and Professional Development is hosting two résumé workshops in October. CCPD staff will offer tips for creating a great first impression with a résumé.

Oct. 2

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform their students about the workshops. If you would like your students to attend a workshop for a course, inform the CCPD so a staff member can send you an attendance record.

UTS-SFA Police Department to host National Night Out event
Night Out

The University of Texas System Police Department at SFA will host its annual National Night out event from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Lot 3, between the Baker Pattillo Student Center and Kennedy Auditorium.

Join them for free food, a bounce house and fun for the entire family.

Wellness fair slated for Oct. 2

Student Wellness will host the fall Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

This free event will provide resources and services from a variety of SFA and Nacogdoches organizations and businesses. Attendees can learn about a variety of topics, including mental health, nutrition, physical well-being, sexual health and stress management. Students will gain knowledge and resources needed to take control of their well-being, while sampling products, refreshments and giveaways. Faculty members and instructors are encouraged to bring or inform their class about the event.

Nursing students offering free drive-through flu vaccinations

Students in the DeWitt School of Nursing are inviting community members to a free drive-through flu vaccination event Oct. 4-5 at the DeWitt School of Nursing Complex, located at 5707 North St.

In partnership with East Texas Community Health Services, fourth-semester nursing students in the community health course will administer flu shots from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 4 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5. The event is open to the public and flu shots are free. Children 4 years of age and older are eligible for a vaccine.

Human Resources is offering weekly, 30-minute training sessions at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays for the hiring manager toolkit. These sessions are for any staff or faculty who either serve on a search committee or have hiring process responsibilities.

SFA Gardens October lecture to feature pretty plants, specialty soils

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Lauren Kilpatrick, technical trial manager at Syngenta Flowers, and Cade Boyd, horticulture equipment specialist with Profile Products, will explore the diverse world of horticulture’s supporting industries.

Dr. Flora Farago, associate professor in the School of Human Sciences

Farago, along with colleagues from Northern Arizona University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, co-published the article, "The link between early adolescents' gender discrimination and gender attitudes about peers: Does gender similarity matter?" in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology.

The article is about gender discrimination, gender attitudes and gender identity in adolescents.

Megan Weatherly, executive director of the Lumberjack Learning Commons

Weatherly has been named to a two-year term on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Student Success Advisory Workgroup.

In addition to broad support of the state’s higher education strategic plan, Building a Talent Strong Texas, the SSAW works very closely with the THECB’s Division for Student Success, whose staff are engaged in a number of projects to identify the types and effectiveness of various student success programs and initiatives across the state. SSAW members provide guidance, feedback and recommendations for accelerating student success programs and initiatives that positively impact access, persistence, completions and workforce transitions, including for academically and economically disadvantaged student populations.

Wind Ensemble to premiere Composing in the Wilderness program pieces
Composing wilderness

SFA’s Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the 2024-25 school year at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in Turner Auditorium.

This will be the first of three concerts to be held nationally featuring six brand new pieces created as part of the Composing in the Wilderness project that took place at Lake Clark National Park in Alaska during the summer of 2023.
