Faculty Senate to meet Jan. 22
The SFA Faculty Senate will hold a meeting at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in McGee Business Building, Room 133, and on Zoom.
Members of the SFA community are welcome to attend the public portion of the session either in person or via Zoom. However, per senate rules, only faculty senators are permitted to participate in the discussions during the meeting. Therefore, questions should be forwarded in advance to your faculty senator for potential consideration.

Montgomery Professorship Invited Speaker Series features Dr. Neal Nghia Nguyen
The Montgomery Professorship Invited Speaker Series will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center, Room 212, or on Zoom.
Nguyen’s presentation, “The Science of Compassion: An Overview and Practical Implications in Personal and Professional Settings,” will be a practical workshop for attendees.

The Fitness Buddies program at the Campus Rec was featured in Campus Rec Magazine.
The program pairs students with fitness-oriented peers to foster community in a non-intimidating environment. Jescelyn Madrigal, assistant director of fitness and wellness, and her team were featured in this article.

Applications for the SFA Charter School 2025-26 school year are now open in the SFA Charter School office, located at 2428 Raguet St., and on the school’s website. The lottery enrollment application window is open until 5:30 p.m. Jan. 31.

Deadline extended for Gateways, Not Gatekeepers
The submission deadline for the Gateways, Not Gatekeepers event has been extended to Feb.1.
This event provides a space for SFA faculty and staff to share institutional knowledge and practical strategies with colleagues. Topics might include navigating the application process for student travel funds, tips for moving into leadership positions and other insights that support professional growth and success at SFA.

Regional seminar for East Texas health care professionals, students
SFA's dietetics and nutritional sciences program and the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is hosting an event for health care professionals and students from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Regents' Suites A and B.
Attendees can explore the latest evidence-based strategies in treating thyroid problems, diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and gastrointestinal issues; and learn the evolving role of dietitians in various health care settings to improve patient outcomes.
The cost includes lunch, vendors and a poster session, along with three educational presentations, approved for three continuing education units for registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Students can register with a reduced rate. Register by Jan. 30 on Eventbrite.

Pre-nursing students qualify for free supplies
Pre-nursing students can join the Student Success Center from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Steen Library foyer for Supplies for Success.
In partnership with the Dewitt School of Nursing and the School of Social Work, free supplies and campus resources to support first- and second-year pre-nursing students in their studies will be available. This initiative is funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Student Success Acceleration Program 2.0 Grant with the goal of supporting students' persistence and degree completion.

Amy Camacho, Office of Strategic Analytics and Institutional Research
Camacho, assistant director of analysis and projects, was presented AARC's first Director's Choice Award in December. This award acknowledges campus partners who have gone above and beyond to contribute to AARC's success for students.
Camacho has developed a number of customized assessment reports for AARC that have been instrumental in studying how AARC can best impact first-year students.

Drs. John Stewart and Victoria Wagner-Greene earn specialist credential
Stewart earned the Certified Health Education Specialist credential and Wagner-Greene achieved the Masters Certified Health Education Specialist credential.
These distinguished certifications underscore their dedication to advancing health education. Moreover, their expertise will greatly enhance students' educational experiences, equipping them with a robust foundation in public health. These achievements also position the program to meet critical requirements for future accreditation efforts.

Dr. Sharon Rice, assistant professor of kinesiology and health science
Rice represented SFA at the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance conference in December and won third place in the poster presentation competition.
Rice guided undergraduate students who performed well in their poster presentations, with three students placing in their poster presentations and one earning an academic scholarship. She is the vice president-elect for the TAHPERD college division.

Dr. Jane Long, professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Long published an article, "A Note on Invariants of the Cohomology of ℤ/p × ℤ/p" in the Missouri Journal of Mathematical Sciences.
The article is the third in a series of publications stemming from her dissertation. A faculty development leave award supported these publications as well as other research projects.

Dr. Hunter Hampton, assistant professor of history
Hampton had an article published in Time magazine that details the history of how Notre Dame influenced other Christian colleges to chase the big-time football dream. Read his piece, “The Cultural Impact of Notre Dame Football Goes Far Beyond the Playing Field,” on Time's website.

Drs. Lauren Burrow and Mahailey Oliver publish poem
Burrow, professor of education studies, and Oliver, adjunct lecturer of English and creative writing, co-published a collaborative poem for Spark to Flame, a literary journal that creates connections between poets. Their poem “Uprooting” can be read on the publication's website.

Stewart shared a presentation titled “Mindful Eating Strategies to Address Childhood Obesity” at the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance's 101st annual convention in Galveston.

Comedian Warren to perform in SFA’s University Series
The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts presents nationally acclaimed comedian Greg Warren as part of its University Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in Turner Auditorium.
Warren, celebrated for his sharp wit and relatable storytelling, has been featured on Comedy Central and “The Late Late Show.” A co-host on the popular Nateland Podcast network, his blend of humor and charm promises a night of unforgettable entertainment.
