SFA will be featured on an episode of the Amazon Prime television series "The College Tour," which highlights colleges and universities across the country and showcases campus life through stories told by current students.

Hosted by Alex Boylan, winner of CBS’s "The Amazing Race," each episode of "The College Tour" focuses on a single institution, providing an in-depth look at academics, campus culture and student experiences.

SFA faculty member research cited in presidential economic report

Research published by Dr. Rebecca Davis, associate professor of economics in SFA’s Rusche College of Business, that summarizes the history of U.S. coal-fired plant retirements and offers future projections for the industry was cited in the 2025 Economic Report of the President.

The Center for Career and Professional Development is hosting several career fairs this spring.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform their students about the free events. If you would like your students to attend an event or workshop for a course, email ccpd@sfasu.edu to receive an attendance record.

School of Human Sciences to offer new SFA Tartan bow tie

The School of Human Sciences offers a new product in its line of official SFA Tartan merchandise — a luxury silk bow tie.

ETRC Archive Lab spring schedule announced

The East Texas Research Center will host four classes for its Archive Lab. Classes are at 4 p.m. on the first floor of Steen Library unless otherwise stated on the lab's registration page.

• Oral Histories: Feb. 20

• Creating an Exhibit: March 27

• Photo Digitization Workshop: April 17

• County Records Program: May 22

The Archive Lab is free and open to students, staff, faculty and community members. Class size is limited and registration is required. Register for classes on the ETRC Archive Lab events page.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Lauren Burrow, professor in the Department of Education Studies

Burrow presented “FAIRYTALES: Accepting the Fantastic(a)l Writing of MotherScholars” at the European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, an international conference that fosters mutual interdependency and interconnectedness for qualitative inquirers.

Citori Helveston, AARC math and business program director
Helvston

The Academic Assistance Resource Center welcomes Helveston to its team.

Helveston is not new to the AARC — as a student, she was an AARC finite math tutor. She served in several student leadership positions, and after graduating, served as a graduate teaching assistant. In this position, she trained advanced tutors and conducted learning strategy workshops. Helveston graduated with a Master's of Business Administration.

Dr. Carmen Montaña, professor of biology
Montana

Montaña received the 2025 Outstanding Fisheries Worker Award at the Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

Montaña was recognized for making important research contributions to the knowledge of fish ecology and evolution, food web ecology, conservation of imperiled and endangered fish species, and management and conservation of freshwater ecosystems in temperate and tropical regions.

Montaña also is training the new generation of fisheries science students. At this annual meeting, two of her students were recognized for their outstanding research projects.

Dr. Jacob Turner, associate professor of mathematics and statistics

Turner and his collaborators published a peer-reviewed article titled “Comparison of two independent populations of compositional data with positive correlations among components using a nested dirichlet distribution” in "Psychological Methods."

The article derives novel statistical methodology to determine differences in population groups when the data sets are compositional such as when conducting Morris water maze experiments. The methods also are applicable in many other research fields including flow cytometry experiments within immunology, agriculture and sports statistics.
