ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Todd Barrios, chef instructor, and Kevin Hill, clinical instructor
Lighthouse students

Lumberjack chefs hosted 15 students for the inaugural Lighthouse for the Blind Iron Chef Competition Feb. 7. Visually impaired and blind students from across Region 7 gathered in the Human Sciences Building North kitchen for a day of learning and hands-on activities. Chefs Barrios and Hill demonstrated kitchen safety, knife skills and stir fry cooking in preparation for the students to participate in an Iron Chef-style competition. The day was a success with students preparing a meal and earning awards for their efforts.

With the help of Lighthouse for the Blind, award certificates were presented in both print and braille. Members of the SFA Braille and Cane Club were present and instrumental in guiding the competitors through the process. The day ended with Lumberjack culinary students and the Axes and Embers BBQ Competition team serving a barbecue lunch from Lumberjack Express.

Dr. Ghanem Ayed Elhersh, assistant professor of media and communication
Elhersh book

Elhersh published a book in collaboration with Dr. M. Laeeq Khan, associate professor in Ohio University's School of Media Arts and Studies, titled "Decoding Disney’s Arab and Muslim Narratives: A Dual Lens on Animated Film Frames and Audience Perceptions." The book examines the depiction of Arabs and Muslims in prominent Disney animated films through application of a rigorous, mixed-methods convergent parallel design.

By integrating interdisciplinary perspectives and thorough methodology, this book provides an insightful exploration of the causative links between media portrayals and public attitudes, offering a resource for scholars, media professionals and readers interested in the intersections of media, culture and minority representation.
