Dr. Carmen Montaña, associate professor of biology
Montaña, along with her former biology students Erin Shepta and Courtney Plummer, published "Assessing the Health of a Stream in East Texas: An Approach Using Aquatic Invertebrates and Fish as Bioindicators" in the journal Southeastern Naturalist.
The research used an integrative approach based on aquatic macroinvertebrate and fishes as biological indicators of water quality to investigate the health of Lanana Creek in Nacogdoches. Despite being an urban stream, Lanana Creek contains 37 fish species and a high diversity of aquatic invertebrates. Both aquatic communities appear to vary seasonally as a response of environmental variability and changes in water quality.
