Friends of the Visual Arts establish the Peter Andrew Art Scholarship
SFA's Friends of the Visual Arts, a community organization supporting East Texas arts and art students through fundraising, has established the Peter Andrew Art Scholarship to honor Andrew’s longtime service as an art educator, artist and dedicated supporter of the organization.

Faculty and staff book club begins Feb. 20
The Montgomery Professorship in Humane Education, held by Dr. Sarah Straub, associate professor of education studies, will fund a faculty and staff book club for the spring semester focusing on "The Nature Fix" by Florence Williams.
Facilitated by Jessica Waguespack, program director for Student Wellness, the book club offers 12 participants a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues in thoughtful discussions designed to inspire both personal and professional growth. Sessions will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 20, March 20, April 10, April 24 and May 1 outdoors at various SFA locations.

National Constitution Center, SFA to host free, interactive workshop
Join SFA’s Department of Education Studies and the National Constitution Center for “Past as Prologue: Teaching the Civic Story of the United States” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28.
This high-energy professional learning experience is designed for educators who want practical, inspiring ways to make civic learning meaningful and engaging. Featuring Dr. Court Carney, SFA professor of history, and Ryan Beaudoin, NCC specialist, this event is free and open to the public.

Denise Stringer Davis, assistant professor of art education
Davis was invited to assist in the January firing of a wood-fired kiln based on an eighth century kiln used by Japanese potters to produce high-fire ceramics. This opportunity was provided by funding through SFA’s School of Art and the invitation of the Turkey Trot Initiative Residency in Arkansas run by Chris Powell, art professor at Texas Christian University. Tadashi Hirakawa, a Japanese ceramicist and archaeologist, is researching the kiln.

Dr. Wycliffe Njororai, Department of Allied Health Studies chair
Njororai’s new book and article, "East Africa’s dismal football record doesn’t match its passion – what needs to happen," draw on his career-long research and explore the deep roots of football in the region of East Africa.
East Africa loves football, but despite fan support, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania haven’t translated this enthusiasm into sustained international success. Njororai's book examines this along with the game’s structural and gender challenges and the immense opportunities that lie ahead for this region.
