Wood

SFA will launch one of Texas’ few university-based, in-house advertising agencies this fall, giving students the opportunity to build their portfolios, develop professional skills and produce work for real clients before they graduate.

Housed in the Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship, the student-powered agency will bring together students from across academic disciplines to offer advertising, branding and marketing support for athletics, fine arts and other campus events, as well as ACE partner businesses and name, image and likeness campaigns.

In addition, Tim L. Wood has joined ACE as its latest entrepreneur in residence following decades of agency experience in marketing and creative direction as well as six years of managing his own freelance marketing services with WoodThink Creative.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Freddie Avant, associate dean and director of the School of Social Work
Avant

Avant was honored as a Pioneer of Social Work by the National Association of Social Workers Foundation in Washington D.C.

The Pioneer of Social Work program honors social workers who have contributed to the evolution and enrichment of the profession. Avant has dedicated his career to improve social and human conditions. Throughout his career, Avant has focused on creating the growth and accessibility of social work education and practice and expanded opportunities for students to enter the profession.

He received several awards including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Lyon College and the Presidential Honor Award from the National Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors.

Dr. Jason Bruck, associate professor of biology

Bruck’s research into dolphin long-term memory was featured in an article about animal minds in the May edition of Ranger Rick. Bruck's research discovered dolphins can remember hearing the signature whistles, or dolphin names, of former pool mates after more than 20 years of not living together. This represents some of the longest memories ever found in a non-human species.

Dr. Colin Lawson, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Jane Long, professor of mathematics

Lawson and Long recently published the article β€œThe conjugacy class structure of the 𝐐𝐝(𝒑) groups” in the New York Journal of Mathematics. The paper establishes deep information about the structure of the infinite family of special affine groups, referred to as 𝐐𝐝(𝒑), when 𝒑 is an odd prime number. This work stems from Lawson and Long’s overlapping backgrounds in pure mathematics and is part of a larger ongoing project.
